 Basic Needs Assistance

JFCS's provides Basic Needs Assistance to the Northern NJ community through emergency financial assitance and career/job guidance

Case Management

JFCS’s Family Case Management program works with the whole person. Those referred are multi-need individuals and families, whose struggles negatively impact daily functioning. Typical needs include assistance with healthcare (including purchasing, applying for, understanding, and using insurance), disabilities resources, chores, utilities programs, advocacy, legal issues, transportation, and financial assistance. The goal of the program is to help participants access the services and resources they need, either within JFCS or through outside referrals.
Interventions are individualized based on the needs of the client, but the following components are consistent for all who participate:

  • Assessment
Leads to a triaged list of short-term and long-term needs.
  • Financial review
Includes applications for any government programs / benefits to which the client may be entitled.
  • Action plan
    Who does what by when.

Clients are discharged from the program when they have either achieved their goals or made an informed decision about pursuing or not pursuing the remaining steps in their action plan.

Emergency Financial Assistance

JFCS completes a financial assessment with the client that includes reviewing sources of income, assets, living expenses, debt, etc. If the client is determined to be in need, JFCS can provide emergency financial assistance through private donors and public funding.

JFCS also has access to FEMA funds to provide emergency housing (rental/mortgage) and food assistance to residents in Bergen County who have been impacted financially by COVID-19. Assistance paying utility bills is the another form of financial assistance provided as well.

Our financial assistance program is provided as part of a self-sufficiency plan that includes working with other service providers in the community, applying for other forms of assistance and programs, and working with a case manager.

JFCS is a licensed mental health agency. All insurance accepted – Medicaid, Medicare and private insurance. For those without insurance coverage, JFCS has a sliding fee scale.
